1.2 Course description

Introduction to property and land law

Acquisition of interests in land: legal and equitable methods

Concurrent interests under co-ownership

Acquisition of possessory title by adverse possession

Priority: enforceability of interests against third parties

Leases: nature; creation; termination; relationship of landlord and tenant

Leasehold covenants: nature; enforceability; remedies

Licences: nature; revocability; enforceability

Easements: nature; creation; termination; enforceability

Security interests: mortgages; charges

3.2 Assessment Detail

Group Presentation will be conducted in the first semester. It is compulsory in the sense that students must participate in this activity. Land Law I & II each account for 50% of the overall Land Law I & II grade. Group presentation is only within the assessment of Land Law I, accounting for 30% of the Land Law I grade. In the overall grade setting, the percentage of each component is: group presentation (15%), Land Law I exam (35%), and Land Law II exam (50%). To help students understand the requirements and expectations for this presentation activity, there will be illustrations in the first session.

Learning Activities

4.1 Learning Activity Plan

Lecture: 2 hours / week for 12 teaching weeks
Tutorial: 1 hour / week for 12 teaching weeks
Private study time: 9.5 hours / week for 12 teaching weeks

Remarks: the normative student study load per credit unit is 25 ± 5 hours (ie. 150  ± 30 hours for a 6-credit course), which includes all learning activities and experiences within and outside of classroom, and any assessment task and examinations and associated preparations.
