1.2 Course description

Students will learn about Hong Kong’s legal and regulatory framework for financial markets and gain an excellent overview of critical regulatory concerns and industry issues in the fast-developing regulatory landscape, especially in the age of evolving AI and tech developments.

Students will analyse the critical history of financial services regulatory reforms since the 2008 financial crisis and familiarise themselves with the consequential reforms in order to develop a framework of understanding for future analysis. Students will equip themselves on knowledge of current issues on cybersecurity, digital assets, and operational resilience which are critically relevant hot topics for financial institutions. Participation in active organised discussions in class is crucial.

Advanced topics including developments on financial markets infrastructure, legal technology and Family Office will be introduced.

By the end of this course, students will have developed an overview of the critical current issues financial markets professionals face and will become knowledgeable on adopting a framework of understanding and applying the key legal and regulatory principles. In addition, they will also acquire practical skills in analysing regulatory consultations and developments. These analytical and practical skills are highly relevant and valued for legal, compliance and control functions in the financial markets industry.

Learning Activities

4.1 Learning Activity Plan

Seminar: 3 hours / week for 12 teaching weeks
Private study time: 9.5 hours / week for 12 teaching weeks

Remarks: the normative student study load per credit unit is 25 ± 5 hours (ie. 150 ± 30 hours for a 6-credit course), which includes all learning activities and experiences within and outside of classroom, and any assessment task and examinations and associated preparations.
